Welcome to Lonny Likes

Where I occasionally write about the things I like: golf, numbers, and some other stuff.

By reading this newsletter, you’ll improve your game, and your enjoyment of the game, without ever picking up a club.

I’ve been deep in the trenches of Golf Twitter and the other pockets of the internet for years. I write about and share the interesting stuff I encounter. Some posts may be quite esoteric, but that’s the way I like it. If you’re a golf sicko, your interests will be piqued after reading and exploring the links that frequent each post. For example and serving as a nice segue, here is an article extensively detailing both Patrick Reed’s on-course accomplishments and alleged history of scandalous behavior from college. Within it, I found the following quote:

Gregory had been a lifelong underdog himself, a college golfer under Hank Haney at SMU who never won a tournament, and he knew almost from the minute he turned pro that he lacked the mental game to succeed. When he looked around at his friends who were succeeding at the highest levels, he saw players who believed they were twice as good as they actually were. Gregory was the opposite—he never thought he was half as good as he really was—and the sport made him miserable. But the analytical brain that spoiled his playing career made him an ideal coach. He knew exactly who to look for, and he became an expert not only at finding diamonds in the rough, but training them to take down the high-profile players in whose shadow they had spent their entire lives.

Though not the primary focus of the article I resonated deeply with this quote. Like Coach Josh Gregory, I have an analytical mind and am also a former collegiate golfer who disappointingly considers himself a massive underachiever. I fully believe my shortcomings in competitive events were due to a poor mental game, not an inability to hit golf shots. In my opinion, playing great golf is almost all mental. Once I realized how disproportionately influential strong mental performance is to maximizing your physical abilities, I have focused almost exclusively on improving my mental game and have scoured for resources to help me do so. My goal is to continue learn as much as possible about playing golf optimally and as I learn I will share those lessons here so that you too can play the best golf of your life.

Though golf in general is the connective thread across all posts, there is a strict focus on individual topics and exercises which improve your mental game. These posts are short and easily digestible. They’re primarily written as notes to myself so that I can remember how I should be thinking and operating when I’m on the course. For this reason, these posts will typically be paywalled. But since they contain immense value, I highly recommend becoming a paid subscriber to gain full access. The price of a paid subscription ($59/year) will easily pay for itself as you begin to beat down on your friends in matches and lose a lot less golf balls.
